UL 1598 Certified Lighting
The Baseline Safety Standard for North American Luminaires
UL 1598 is the specific UL standard for the safety of luminaires, covering construction, electrical safety, and performance requirements for light fixtures. It's the foundational safety standard most general-purpose lighting fixtures are certified against in North America, addressing risks like electrical shock, fire, and mechanical failure under normal and reasonably foreseeable fault conditions.
UL 1598 is distinct from application-specific standards like UL 844 (hazardous locations) or UL 924 (emergency lighting) — a fixture intended for a classified hazardous location or emergency application needs certification to those additional, more specific standards on top of, or instead of, standard listing. Two related supplements build directly on UL 1598 rather than replacing it: UL 1598A adds requirements specific to luminaires installed on marine vessels, and UL 1598C covers LED retrofit conversion kits installed into existing fixture housings.
These two standards are closely related but apply to different scenarios:
For standard new fixture installations, UL 1598 is generally the relevant baseline standard. If your project involves hazardous locations, emergency lighting, or retrofit kits specifically, confirm whether an additional or different UL standard applies on top of or instead of this baseline.
