Oil and gas operations span a wide range of hazard conditions within a single facility. Processing units and storage tanks typically require Class I Division 1 rated fixtures, where flammable vapors are present continuously or frequently under normal operation. Adjacent areas — control rooms, pump buildings, offices near the process area — often fall under Class I Division 2, where hazardous atmosphere presence is limited to abnormal or fault conditions. Facilities operating internationally may instead classify these same risk levels under the IEC Zone 1 and Zone 2 system.
Beyond ignition risk, oil and gas sites also demand fixtures built for extreme ambient temperatures near process heat, Marine-Grade Lighting corrosion resistance for coastal and offshore platforms, and NEMA 4X or IP66/IP67 ingress protection for outdoor exposure and washdown areas.
A single oil and gas facility often requires multiple classification levels across different zones — Division 1 near active process equipment, Division 2 in buffer areas, and unclassified ratings in office or administrative spaces. A facility hazard assessment, typically performed by a qualified engineer, determines the exact classification, gas group, and temperature code required for each area.
