Pulp and paper production generates combustible wood dust and fiber ("flyings") in processing and handling areas, which may fall under Class II Division 1/Class II Division 2 for dust or Class III for fiber-related hazards, depending on the specific process. Chemical pulping processes also introduce corrosive conditions, requiring Heavy-Duty Harsh Rated Lighting or NEMA 4X construction in treatment areas.
High humidity throughout much of the mill — particularly in pulping and drying areas — adds another layer of moisture exposure that standard industrial fixtures aren't always built to withstand over time.
Confirm which specific areas of your mill generate combustible dust or fiber, and to what concentration, since this determines classification requirements. Separately, evaluate chemical and humidity exposure in pulping and treatment areas to determine appropriate corrosion-resistant construction.
