UL 844 Certified Lighting
Certified for Class I, II & III Hazardous Locations
UL 844 is the standard specifically covering electric lighting fixtures for hazardous (classified) locations under the North American Class/Division system, addressing Class I (gas), Class II (dust), and Class III (fibers) hazards. It's the specific standard that governs Explosion Proof Lighting and other hazardous-location-rated luminaires, distinct from the general luminaire safety standard, UL 1598.
UL 844 certification verifies a fixture's construction — including flame paths, enclosure integrity, and component ratings — meets the requirements for its specific classification (class, division, group, and temperature code), ensuring it won't become an ignition source in the hazardous atmosphere it's rated for.
These standards apply to different use cases:
A fixture intended for a hazardous location needs UL 844 certification specifically — general UL 1598 listing alone doesn't qualify a fixture for installation in a classified area.
For any installation in a classified hazardous location, confirm the fixture carries UL 844 certification specifically matched to the site's class, division, group, and temperature code — not just general UL listing. A facility hazard assessment determines these specifics for each area of a site.
