Heavy-Duty Harsh Rated Lighting

Heavy-duty harsh-rated lighting is built to withstand conditions standard fixtures can't handle, such as extreme vibration, corrosive atmospheres, moisture, dust, and high ambient temperatures. Red Sky Lighting designs harsh-rated luminaires for facilities where fixture failure means costly downtime, not just a maintenance ticket.

What “Harsh Rated” Actually Means

Harsh-duty ratings typically account for several overlapping stresses: ingress protection (resistance to dust and water intrusion), corrosion resistance (for coastal, chemical, or washdown environments), vibration and impact tolerance (relevant near heavy machinery or vehicle traffic), and performance across wide ambient temperature ranges.

Unlike a single hazard classification, "harsh rated" is more of an umbrella description — the right fixture depends on which of these specific conditions apply to your site, and to what degree.

Harsh-Rated vs. Hazardous-Rated

These categories often overlap but aren't the same thing:

  • Harsh-rated addresses physical and environmental durability — corrosion, impact, moisture, temperature extremes.
  • Hazardous-Rated Lighting addresses ignition risk from flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dust.

A facility can require both: a fixture that's both classification-rated for a hazardous atmosphere and built to withstand harsh physical conditions like washdown or high vibration.

Where Heavy-Duty Harsh Rated Lighting Is Used

  • Metal processing and foundries — vibration, heat, and particulate exposure
  • Petrochemical and industrial manufacturing — combined chemical and physical stress
  • Wash-down and food processing facilities — frequent high-pressure water exposure
  • Outdoor industrial sites with corrosive exposure — coastal or chemical-adjacent installations

Choosing the Right Fixture

Identify which specific harsh conditions your site presents — moisture, corrosion, vibration, temperature, or a combination — and match ingress protection (IP) rating, material construction, and impact rating (IK rating) accordingly. Sites with multiple harsh conditions typically need a fixture engineered to address all of them together, not just the most obvious one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between harsh-rated and hazardous-rated lighting?

Harsh-rated addresses physical durability — corrosion, moisture, vibration, temperature. Hazardous-rated addresses ignition risk from flammable gases, vapors, or dust. A facility may require both.

Does harsh-rated lighting need a specific IP rating?

It depends on the site's specific conditions. Higher IP ratings (such as IP66 or IP67) are common for harsh-duty applications, but the right rating depends on your facility's actual moisture and dust exposure.

Can harsh-rated fixtures also be hazardous-location rated?

Yes, many fixtures are engineered to meet both harsh-duty durability standards and hazardous-location classification requirements simultaneously, when a site requires both.
