NEC Zone Classification (Class I, Zone 2) Lighting
Zone-Rated Lighting for Class I Hazardous Locations
The National Electrical Code (NEC) offers two parallel systems for classifying Class I hazardous locations: the traditional Class/Division system (Division 1 and Division 2), and the Zone system (Zone 0, 1, and 2), which was added to more closely align U.S. practice with the IEC Zone system used internationally. Class I Zone 1 and Class I Zone 2 apply the same underlying risk logic as Division 1 and Division 2 — how frequently a hazardous atmosphere is present — but use zone terminology and, in some cases, different equipment protection concepts.
A facility can choose either system, but generally shouldn't mix them within the same hazardous area — consistency in classification approach across a site's documentation and equipment simplifies both compliance review and future maintenance.
Both systems classify the same underlying hazard, using different frameworks:
Class I Zone 1 roughly corresponds to Class I Division 1, and Class I Zone 2 roughly corresponds to Class I Division 2, though the equipment protection concepts recognized under each system aren't always identical.
Confirm which system your facility's existing documentation, equipment, and engineering team already use — switching systems mid-facility adds complexity without a safety benefit. New facilities or those standardizing with international operations may prefer the Zone system; facilities with an established Division-based equipment base typically stay with Divisions.
