LED Retrofit Kits, Certified Safe
UL 1598C specifically addresses LED retrofit luminaire conversion kits — the internal components (driver, LED array, wiring) installed into an existing fixture housing to replace its original light source (often incandescent, fluorescent, induction, or HID) with LED. This differs from UL 1598, which covers complete, factory-built luminaires as a whole product; UL 1598C requirements supplement rather than replace the base UL 1598 luminaire requirements.
UL 1598C certification is important for retrofit projects because it verifies the retrofit kit is compatible with, and safe within, the specific type of existing housing it's designed for — an important distinction from simply installing generic LED components into an arbitrary fixture body.
The key distinction is what's being certified:
For hazardous-location retrofit projects specifically, an additional and critical consideration is whether the retrofit maintains the original housing's hazardous-location certification — this isn't automatic and should be confirmed directly with the retrofit kit manufacturer.
Confirm that a specific UL 1598C-certified retrofit kit is tested and listed as compatible with your existing fixture housing model — certification doesn't automatically transfer to every housing type. For hazardous-location fixtures, also confirm in writing whether the retrofit preserves the original classification rating.
