UL 1598A Certified Lighting
Marine-Rated Safety for Shipboard & Offshore Lighting
UL 1598A is not a standalone standard — it's a supplement to UL 1598, adding requirements specific to luminaires installed aboard marine vessels using grounded electrical systems. A fixture certified to UL 1598A has met both the base luminaire safety requirements of UL 1598 and the additional shipboard-specific requirements layered on top, referencing the U.S. Coast Guard's electrical engineering regulations and IEEE 45 (the recommended practice for electrical installations on shipboard).
This is a different concern from Marine-Grade Lighting corrosion resistance generally: UL 1598A certification is specifically about a fixture's suitability for installation on a vessel's electrical system, while marine-grade construction addresses material and housing durability against salt air and moisture. A fixture intended for shipboard installation often needs both.
The relationship between these two is supplemental, not either/or:
Confirm whether your installation is genuinely shipboard (subject to U.S. Coast Guard electrical regulations) versus a coastal or offshore facility that's marine-adjacent but land- or platform-based — the latter typically calls for marine-grade construction rather than UL 1598A specifically. For hazardous-location marine vessel installations, additional standards beyond UL 1598A apply.
